Pianist Tigran Hamasyan Performs Armenian Chants and Verses at Ani Ruins

Award-winning Armenian jazz pianist Tigran Hamasyan performed a concert on June 21 in the historic ruins of Ani, the medieval Armenian capital located on the Turkish-Armenian border, the Hurriyet Daily News reports.

Within the scope of his project titled “Luys i Luso,” Hamasyan will perform in various Turkish provinces until June 30. He will also give concerts at 100 churches in Armenia, Georgia, Lebanon, France, Belgium, Switzerland,Czech Republic, England, Germany, Luxembourg, Russia and the U.S.

The next two concerts will take place in Akhtamar on June 23 and in Diyarbakir Church of St. Giragos on June 25. The end of the project in Turkey will take place within the framework of the jazz festival in Istanbul on June 30.

Hamasyan, 27, who started playing piano at the age of three and won the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2003 and the Thelonious Monk Institute piano contest at the age of 18, performs traditional Armenian music in his concerts.

The 90-minute event at the ancient ruins drew great interest from the audience. The master pianist was accompanied by the Yerevan State Chamber Music Choir under the baton of Harutyun Topikyan.

Tamar Nalci, the project coordinator at Anadolu Kültür, which organized Hamasyan’s concerts in Turkey, said the first concert of the program was performed in Ani, and continued:

“Hamasyan is famous Armenian jazz pianist. He gives mini concerts in historic places and churches in many parts of the world, accompanied by the Armenian State Chamber Choir. This is a church music concert. He is taking the stage with a team of 25 persons. At the same time, a documentary film is being made on this process. The documentary team records these concerts. What is happening here is a historic moment because Armenians have an emotional time due to their past in Ani.”

Former US Ambassador: Safarov Repatriation Ended Hungary’s Status as a Reliable Strategic Partner

WASHINGTON, DC — In her newly published memoir of her 2010-2013 term as American Ambassador to Hungary, Eleni Kounalakis discusses the U.S. State Department’s loss of faith in the administration of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, according to a June 19 review by the Washington Post.

In what the Post describes as a “far more forthcoming book — personally and analytically — than one would expect from a diplomat”, Kounalakis details her disappointment at what she saw as the Hungarian government’s backsliding toward a more totalitarian government, similar to the one Hungary had under communism. Instead of the “New Deal” that they had anticipated, Kounalakis writes, Hungarians were getting “the Old Deal, with government having too much control over the people of Hungary all over again.”

According to the Post review: “It took the release of an ax murderer to raise alarms in Washington. In late August 2012, Orban suddenly repatriated Ramil Safarov, an Azeri serving a life term in Hungary for hacking an Armenian soldier to death during a NATO-sponsored training program. To nobody’s surprise, Safarov received a hero’s welcome in Azerbaijan and was immediately pardoned, promoted and given a new apartment. Armenia cut off diplomatic ties with Hungary, and tensions escalated in Nagorno-Karabakh, over which Armenia and Azerbaijan had fought a war in the early 1990s.”

“Don’t they realize that their little trick could cause a war?” Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Marie Yovanovitch asked Kounalakis on the telephone.

“Who will clean it up — Hungarians? No, Hungarians won’t clean up the mess. We will! We will be the ones left to fix it!”

Kounalakis reveals that this diplomatic fracas was ultimately what “ended Hungary’s two-decade status as a reliable strategic partner of the United States,” according to the Post.

That little trick, Kounalakis says, ended Hungary’s two-decade status as a reliable strategic partner of the United States.”

Thousands Holding Sit-In Protest In Yerevan Against Electricity Prices

WATCH: Live Stream Of The Protest

YEREVAN (RFE/RL) — Several thousand protesters have marched toward Armenia’s presidential residence in Yerevan to demonstrate against rising electricity prices.

Participants organized an improvised sit-in on Baghramyan Avenue on June 22 as riot police blocked the crowd on its way to the area housing government offices.

Tension was high, with men wearing civilian clothes trying to force journalists out of the area.

Members of the group No to Plunder, which organized the rally, demanded that they be allowed free movement through the avenue, but police warned that the protest march was “unlawful.”

President Serzh Sarkisian proposed to meet a small group of protesters if demonstrators stopped the march, but the offer was rejected.

The Public Services Regulatory Commission of Armenia voted on June 17 to raise electricity prices by 16 percent to 49 drams ($0.1) per kilowatt hour (kWh). This was the third consecutive price hike in the past three years.

Turkey Reacts Angrily to Belgian Prime Minister's Recognition of Armenian Genocide

ANKARA — Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel’s recognition of the killing of Armenians in the hands of the Ottoman Empire in 1915 as Genocide has “distorted historical facts,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said June 20 in a statement.

Michel said during a parliamentary session on June 17 that the events perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire between 1915 – 1917 “must be viewed as a genocide.”

“The relationship between history and the future are occasionally complicated. My position is well known, I am of the view that the tragic events should be labeled as genocide, and that is the position of the Belgian government,” Charles Michel declared in the Belgian Parliament.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry slammed the comment, saying Michel’s remark was “neither acceptable nor excusable.”

Michel’s comment came a few months after the European Parliament adopted a non-binding resolution on April 15 recognizing the 1915 events affecting Armenians as Genocide.” Ankara will return the European Parliament (EP) report on Turkey, European Union Minister Volkan Bozkir has said.

On May 29, Mahinur Özdemir, a Brussels regional MP of Turkish origin, was expelled from her party, the Humanist Democratic Center (CHD) after she refused to recognize the 1915 events as “genocide.”

Turkey has already withdrawn ambassadors from Austria, the Vatican, Luxembourg and Brazil for resolutions that name 1915 incidents genocide or similar reasons, but it kept its envoy to Russia, despite Russian President Vladimir Putin using the word genocide and the Russian parliament adopting a likewise resolution on the 1915 events.

Armenian Bar Association Annual Meeting and Banquet

BEVERLY HILLS — From a star-studded gala banquet to an All-Star Judge’s legal education panel and much more, members and guests of the Armenian Bar Association’s 26th Annual Meeting at the luxurious Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills, California were treated to a weekend that they won’t soon forget.

On Saturday morning, following the Association’s business meeting, attendees heard an outstanding educational program featuring four distinguished federal jurists focusing on effective litigation practice in Federal courts. The panel consisted of U.S. District Court Judges Andre Birotte, Jr., Larry Burns and Dickran Tevrizian (ret.) and U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Jacqueline Chooljian. The panel was moderated by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Zaven Sinanian. “What a privilege and honor it is to have panelists with the depth and quality of knowledge that we saw today. We are pleased to deliver unrivaled continuing legal education to our members,” said Armenian Bar Association Chairman, Armen Hovannisian in an interview following the lecture.

The morning lecture was followed by a luncheon, where the keynote speaker was Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Lance Ito (ret.). Most famous for presiding over the “trial of the century” (People vs. O.J. Simpson), Judge Ito drew several ovations from the audience as he shared highlights of his recent trip to the Republic of Armenia and Western Armenia. To the delight of the audience, Judge Ito gave the audience a pictorial and historical glimpse of Armenia and provided realistic and practical means to garner support for universal recognition of the Armenian Genocide. “His slide show presentation of his journeys to both sides of the land of Ararat, and his detailed knowledge of Armenian history and culture, shows that deep inside the soul of Judge Ito is the Armenian spirit. It was a thrilling presentation,” said Armenian Bar Association Board member, Vanna Kitsinian.

The luncheon also featured a special presentation devoted to thanking Pope Francis for his strength in recognizing the Armenian Genocide as the spiritual leader of the one billion member Catholic Church. Accepting the Association’s gratitude on behalf of the Armenian Catholic Church was Father Thomas Garabedian, a Ph.D. in Canon Law, who provided the audience with an informative presentation about the great significance of the Pope’s act of recognition. Father Thomas also provided a spiritually uplifting blessing during the luncheon.

The second panel on restorative justice included international law advocates Steve Dadaian, Karnig Kerkonian, and Seepan Parseghian. Moderated by board member Edvin Minassian, the presentation featured Steve Dadaian’s discussion about the various treaties that may have implications on Armenian reparation claims, such as the Treaties of Sevres, Kars, and Lausanne, and the arbitral award of President Woodrow Wilson. There was also a fascinating comparative analysis of the origins of the Zionist Movement, Theodor Herzl and the lessons that can be drawn from the Jewish experience of re-establishing statehood. Karnig Kerkonian further gave an eye-opening perspective on how the legal theory of Res Judicata can have an important implication on Armenian claims if the Armenian diaspora does not formulate a demand of that which it seeks to obtain as reparations. Seepan Parseghian presented the audience with an innovative means of seeking restorative justice through the Indigenous Peoples Act. The presentations sparked such an intense interest among the audience members that a lively and constructive 45 minute question and answer session followed.

Thousands Rally Against Energy Price Hike in Armenia

YEREVAN — Thousands of people demonstrated in Yerevan on Friday to condemn the latest increase in the prices of electricity in Armenia which was authorized by regulatory authorities on Thursday.

A non-partisan pressure group that organized the demonstration in the city’s Liberty Square gave the authorities until Monday to reverse the more than 16 percent price rise or face fresh street protests. Leaders of the Voch Talanin (No To Plunder) movement said they will urge supporters to march to President Serzh Sarkisian’s headquarters if the unpopular measure is not reversed by that time.

no-gas-hike-4Social-Democratic Hunchakian Party (SDHP) Sargis Tkhruni youth union participated in the June 19 rally. In a statement the group said “The pending rise in electricity prices is another blow to our citizens and will lead to the increase of prices of different products and services. This, first of all, concerns staple goods and products and will be especially felt by the most vulnerable stratum of the society”.

In the meantime, the leaders of the pressure group said, they will hold a three-day sit-in in the square. Hundreds of mostly young protesters joined the nonstop protest.

The group issued the ultimatum after angry speeches by its leaders rejecting the official rationale for raising the energy tariffs for a third time in two years. They stood by their claims that Armenia’s power distribution network has been making massive financial losses because of corruption and mismanagement, rather than the low cost of electricity supplied to households and corporate consumers.

no-gas-hike-3“We will not put up with the plunder of the already impoverished people,” warned Maxim Sargsyan, a No To Plunder leader.

“The price must not go up by a single penny. It’s already high enough,” said another leader, Aram Manukian. He Sarkisian and Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamian are personally responsible for the price hike.

The crowd agreed, chanting “Serzhik, go away!” — a traditional slogan of radical opposition groups.

“It’s a very serious and, I hope, justified tactical decision,” Hovannisian told RFE/RL’s Armenian service (Azatutyun.am) commenting on the announcement of the group’s further steps.

The protest organizers did not specify what they will do if the authorities reject their ultimatum. They only called for more people to join the Liberty Square sit-in with blankets and even tents.

The Armenian government and its political allies have repeatedly defended the higher electricity prices that will take effect on August 1. Citing massive debts incurred by the Electricity Networks of Armenia (ENA) operator in recent years, they say that failure to raise the tariffs would disrupt energy supplies in the country.

The ENA, which is owned by Russia’s national electric utility, last month requested a nearly 40 percent price rise from Public Services Regulatory Commission.

Turkish Intellectuals Who Have Recognized The Armenian Genocide: İsmail Beşikçi

By Hambersom Aghbashian

İsmail Beşikçi (born in 1939 in İskilip, district of Çorum Province of Turkey) is a Turkish scholar. He studied at the Faculty of Political Sciences of Ankara University, and graduated in 1962. After his military duty he became an assistant professor at Atatürk University in Erzurum. He prepared his first anthropological study, an investigation of one of the last nomadic Kurdish tribes, the Alikan, which he submitted in 1967 to the Ankara Faculty of Political Sciences. His book “The order of East Anatolia”, first published in 1969, made him a public enemy because of his way of analysis, and it led to a trial after the 1971 coup. He was detained and put on trial and was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment for violating the indivisibility of the Turkish nation. He was then sentenced many times for imprisonment, totally 100 years, and has spent 17 years in and out of jail. After his first imprisonment, he never found academic employment again and was henceforth to do his research as an independent scholar. He has become a powerful and important symbol for the Kurds and for the human rights movement of Turkey. In 1987 he was a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize. Beşikçi is a PEN* Honorary Member and Turkey’s best-known dissident. He has published 36 books and 32 of them have been banned in Turkey.

According to bianet.org, “A day after journalist Hrant Dink’s murder on 19 January 2007, writer Temel Demirer read a press statement in central Ankara, saying that the journalist had not only been killed for being Armenian, but also because he had spoken of an “Armenian genocide.” He continued saying “There is a genocide in our history, it is called the Armenian genocide……”. The statement was signed by Fikret BaÅŸkaya, Ä°smail BeÅŸikçi, Yüksel Akkaya, Mehmet Özer, Necmettin Salaz, Ahmet Telli and more than forty other Turkish intellectuals.

On April 24, 2010, as genocide commemoration events were being held one after the other in different locations in Istanbul, a groundbreaking two-day conference on the Armenian Genocide began at the Princess Hotel in Ankara. The conference, organized by the Ankara Freedom of Thought Initiative, was held under tight security measures. The conference attracted around 200 attendees, mostly activists and intellectuals who support genocide recognition. Among the prominent names from Turkey were İsmail Beşikçi , Baskin Oran, Ragip Zarakolu, Temel Demirer, and Sait Cetinoglu and many others.

According to “http://www.mirak-weissbach.de”, “The 2012 International Hrant Dink Award was presented to laureates İsmail Beşikçi from Turkey and “Memorial” from Russia, on September 15, 2012. The Chair of the Award Committee Ali Bayramoğlu stated that on his 58th birthday, the name of Hrant Dink, and the awards given in his name were once again to meet with people who work for a world free of discrimination, racism, and violence, and take personal risks for their ideals. And added that the Laureates are determined by an international jury and a two-round system of voting, after an open nomination process.

On November 6, 2012, the temporary exhibition titled “Armenian Genocide and Scandinavian Response” was opened in the Humanitarian Research Library which is a part of the Copenhagen Royal Library. The Turkish government demanded the Royal Library of Denmark to open “an alternative” exhibition about “So-Called Armenian Genocide” and that was agreed by the Library authorities. In response to that a group of Turkish citizens–including academics, writers, former members of parliament, and mayors, have signed an open letter to the Royal Library saying “The support that you are extending to a regime that has made opposition to confronting history and denial of the truth a fundamental principle is equivalent to supporting a regime of apartheid. We want to remind you that your support constitutes an obstacle to democratization efforts in Turkey today.” İsmail Beşikçi was one of the prominent intellectuals who signed it. (1)

On October 29, 2014, armenianow.com wrote “ The Western Armenian National Congress granted prominent Turkish scholar, journalist, sociologist İsmail Beşikçi with a medal of “Gevorg Surenyants Catholicos” for his well-known theory of the Armenian Genocide as a part of the Turkish national project of ethnic cleansing of all Middle Eastern local peoples. Through his studies about the Armenian Genocide Beşikçi fixed two realities, one of them is that from the very beginning Kurd-Turkish political competition was based on the clash of interests for the Armenian property and land.  Beşikçi published numerous article in the Turkish media where he emphasized that the base of the wealth of the Turkish bourgeoisie is the Armenian wealth. Beşikçi said, any nation can commit a genocide, in 1915, Ottoman Turkey, in 1945, Germany, these two are big states, but unfortunately nowadays even the small states do it. To prevent this, the young generation must be informed and aware of all this.”(2)

During their visit to Armenia in October 2014, Turkish and Kurdish public and intellectual figures met with students at Yerevan State University. During the meeting, renowned Turkish scholar İsmail Beşikçi spoke on genocides being committed in the world including the Armenian Genocide.(3)

On April 19, 2015, in Bitlis, Turkey’s most prominent human-rights advocate, Ä°smail BeÅŸikçi, participated in a public commemoration titled, “What Happened to Bitlis Armenians?” Among the 200 or so people present were the co-mayors of Bitlis, Bitlis, Hüseyin Olan and Nevin DaÅŸdemir DaÄŸkıran, who recently renamed one of the city’s streets after William Saroyan; the Fresno-born writer’s parents had been driven from Bitlis.. The event was organized by The Turkish Human Rights Association (Bitlis branch), Bitlis Bar Association and the Gomidas Institute (London). The main speakers were Enis Gül (Head of Bitlis Bar Association), Barzan Serefhanoglu (Journalist), Ara Sarafian (Gomidas Institute) and Ä°smail BeÅŸikçi (Sociologist and veteran human rights’ activist). This was the first public commemoration of the Armenian Genocide in Bitlis.(4)

Jacques Faure: Return of Nagorno Karabakh to Azerbaijan Impossible

YEREVAN — Former French Co-Chair of the OSCE Minsk Group Jacques Faure has said the return of Nagorno Karabakh to Azerbaijan is impossible.

“There are only Armenians living in Nagorno Karabakh and they don’t want to change their status, therefore, the return of Nagorno Karabakh to Azerbaijan is not possible anymore” Jacques Faure said at the NATO Parliamentary Assembly’s 89th Rose-Roth seminar in Yerevan.

“Armenia is right in insisting on the full conformity between such international principles as nonuse of force, peoples’ right to self-determination and territorial integrity,” the former Co-Chair added.

Jacques Faure disagrees with the opinion that the Minsk Group fails to take decisive steps to solve the Karabakh conflict. He added that the mediators coordinate their actions with the schedule of the leaders of the conflicting parties.

“If the Presidents have no time, the mediators can do nothing,” the former Co-Chair said.

He noted that an arms race has started in the region, and Azerbaijan’s military budget is larger than the overall budget of Armenia.

Elaborating on the subject, Mr Faure said that Azerbaijan has a population of 9m, while Armenia’s population is only 3m, with the demographic disproportion growing.

Azerbaijan is also seeking benefits from its oil and energy profits, which have for years been directed to arms purchase.

According to Faure, it’s necessary to demonstrate political will to make mutual concessions.”

Many assume Azerbaijan will again resort to violence after the European Games, but the former Co-Chair says “Azerbaijan will lose much” in this case.

“First of all, it will lose the standing on the international arena, and no one will be willing to invest in a country in war,” he said.

COAF Annual Summer Soiree Raises Over $50,000 in Support of Entrepreneurship Programs at Smart Center in Lori, Armenia

NEW YORK – June 17, 2015 – The Children of Armenia Fund (COAF), a nonprofit organization committed to improving the lives of children in rural Armenia, held its Fifth Annual Summer Soiree on June 16th at the trendy PH-D Rooftop Lounge of the Dream Hotel Downtown in New York City. Close to 300 COAF friends and supporters gathered to celebrate the organization’s recent accomplishments and raise funds for vital entrepreneurship programs to be offered to rural youth and women at the first state-of-the-art COAF Smart Center currently being built in the Lori region of Armenia.

Empowering Armenia’s future entrepreneurs has been at the heart of COAF’s initiatives over the past decade. Providing youth, women and rural businesses with essential skills, knowledge and resources has significantly stimulated local economic development in the regions where COAF has launched its crucial interventions.

COAF’s commitment to expanding to 100 new village communities in Armenia is being realized with the establishment of the first COAF Smart Center in Lori. This strategically located regional epicenter will serve as a bridge for transferring knowledge from professionals to rural communities in an effort to develop functional skills and expertise. The COAF Smart Center will be scalable and self-sustaining, creating a network of empowered Armenian citizens that can work together to improve their own communities from an economic and social standpoint.

The evening was graciously hosted by COAF Board member Diron Jebejian and Andrea Montalbano. Host Committee members included Zarig Baghdadlian, Loris Diran, Alecko Eskandarian, Lara Eurdolian, Monica Ghailian, Sebouh and Michelle Nahabedian, Alex Sarkesian and Chris Sarkesian. I will never forget the hospitality and the warmth. As a Christian, I was inspired by learning the determination of the Armenian people over the centuries. The zeal to uphold Christ, even under the most drastic and persistent persecution, strengthened my faith”, stated Kevin Roberts, upon his return from Armenia.

“We are wholeheartedly thankful to Glendale Adventist Medical Center for choosing to partner with Armenia Fund on this important mission. With God’s blessing, without any doubt, this partnership will translate to a more healthy, vibrant Tavush”, stated Antranik Baghdassarian, President of Armenia Fund U.S. Western Region.

100th Anniversary of Twenty Martyrs Commemorated in Istanbul

ISTANBUL — Armenians and non-Armenians in Istanbul commemorated the 100th anniversary of the martyrdom of the Social Democrat Hunchakian Party’s 20 Martyrs who were executed on the early morning of June 15, 1915 in Beyazit Square during the Armenian Genocide. The commemoration, organized by the Nor Zartonk initiative was held at the Edirnekapi Armenian Martyr’s Cemetery on June 15, 2015.

The history of the 20 Armenian martyrs is distinctly connected with the fate of the Armenian people in 1915. With the restoration of Ottoman constitution in 1908, The Hunchakian Party became one of the main representatives of the Armenian community in the Ottoman Empire. The Hunchakian Party came to understand the Young Turk policies and ideology that adopted a form of Turkish nationalism which was xenophobic and exclusionary in its thinking. These policies threatened to undo the tattered fabric of a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society, once again harming the Armenian populace. The Young Turks seized complete power in a coup d’etat in January 1913. On September 7th of that same year, the 7th General Convention of the Social Democrat Hunchakian Party adjourned with an aim to thwart this new dictatorship by any means necessary, and restore democracy.

The Young Turk dictatorship learned of this aim through the betrayal of a fellow Armenian. Unfortunately, one may argue the betrayal did not only result in the arrest of hundreds of Hunchakian leaders and intellectuals and the execution of these twenty courageous men, but also facilitated the weakening of the leadership of the Armenians at the cusp of the Armenian Genocide.

“The state has not changed at all since those days. Paramaz and his friends suffered the same fate as Hrant Dink did, and the process of rewarding the murderers of Armenians goes on,” a Nor Zartonk Sayat Tekir representative said, adding that attacks on the Armenian cultural heritage continue nowadays.

UK House of Lords Holds Debate on Armenian Genocide Recognition

LONDON — On June 16, the UK House of Lords held a debate on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, Public Radio of Armenia reports.

“Her Majesty’s Government recognizes the terrible suffering inflicted on the Armenian people and other groups living in the Ottoman Empire in the early 20th century,” James Stopford, the Earl of Courtown, said in response to a question by Baroness Caroline Cox on the Government plans to recognize the killings of Armenians, Greeks and Assyrians in 1915 as genocide.

“While remembering and honoring the victims of the past, we believe that the UK’s priority should be to help the peoples and Governments of Turkey and Armenia to face their joint history together,” he added.

Baroness Caroline Cox

Baroness Cox reminded that over 20 states have recognized the Genocide, including France, Canada, Poland, Chile and Austria, as well as the European Parliament and the Welsh Assembly, on the basis of irrefutable evidence of the systematic slaughter of 1.5 million Armenians, Greeks and Assyrians. Noting that His Holiness Pope Francis has emphasized the necessity of genocide recognition for healing, reconciliation and moving forward, she asked whether Her Majesty’s Government would seriously consider reviewing their position.

“Her Majesty’s Government is aware of His Holiness the Pope’s comments during the papal mass to commemorate the victims of 1915, which was held in Rome. We respect his view and agree that it is important to face the lessons of history with courage and do all we can to prevent such atrocities. Her Majesty’s Government reviewed their position of recognition in 2013 and, at present, we have no plans to conduct another review,” the Earl of Courtown said.

Lord Lyndon Harrison noted, in turn, that “it is true that it was genocide that was practiced on the Armenians and other peoples in 1915.” He emphasized the necessity of bringing together the Armenians and Turks in order to find reconciliation.

James Stopford said in response: “We are trying to promote links between Turkey and Armenia in a number of ways. We have had a successful exchange of Turkish and Armenian Chevening alumni, who have visited each others’ countries for the first time. We have also targeted funding on projects such as CivilNet TV, which is a media source for Turkey-related news in Armenia.”

“In addition, we have supported an initiative of our Armenian NGO to publish a book of personal stories from survivors about Turks who saved the lives of Armenians during the massacres and deportations of 1915,” he said.

“Our priority should be to promote reconciliation between the peoples and Governments of Armenia and Turkey and to enable the two countries to face their joint history together,” the Earl of Courtown said. In this context, he said “it’s pleasing to see MPs of Armenian background in the Turkish Parliament.”

Speaking about the Karabakh conflict, James Stopford said: “The status quo is not sustainable.”

“Twenty-one years have now passed since the ceasefire brought the active phase of the conflict to an end. For over 20 years the parties have not been able to reach a peace settlement. That has also meant over 20 years of continued hostility, hatred and suffering. The status quo is certainly not sustainable,” he stated.

International Conference Dedicated to the 100th Year Anniversary of the Martyrdom of the 20 Hunchakians Held in Yerevan

YEREVAN — On June 15, the RA Ministry of Diaspora, the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia (NAS RA) and the Central Committee of the Social Democrat Hunchakian Party (SDHP) held an international conference dedicated to the 100th year anniversary of the martyrdom of the 20 members of the SDHP at the sessions hall of the chairmanship of the NAS RA.

The conference began with opening remarks by Director of the Institute of History of the NAS RA, academician of the NAS RA Ashot Melkonyan.

RA Minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan greeted the participants of the conference and mentioned the following: “The international conference being held today at the National Academy of Sciences of the free and independent Armenia is a worthy tribute to the 20 young people who were hung a century ago. The slogan “I Remember and Demand” also refers to them. Those 20 young people wanted to make the voices of Armenians for freedom heard in all four corners of the globe, and the voice of the Armenians for justice became a prayer for millions of people around the world as respect to the innocent victims. Today, all Armenians share the pain and memories, and we are witnessing the unprecedented awakening and consolidation of the nation and are seeing how Armenians are persistently moving forward until they reach the final solution to the Armenian Cause. This conference serves as an opportunity to commemorate our martyrs, pay homage to the 20 members of the Hunchakian Party and reflect on the achievements made by the 128-year-old political party. The 20 heroes of the Hunchakian Party sacrificed their lives for Armenia’s independence, and the fact that they said “Long Live Armenia” as they were being hung is symbolic.”

President of the NAS RA Radik Martirosyan expressed his greetings to the participants of the conference, after which the participants watched the film “The Dawn for the Twenty”.

In his speech entitled “The Political Evaluation of the Twenty”, Lebanese-Armenian political figure, historian and former Member of the Parliament of Lebanon Yeghig Jerejian reflected on the history and past activities of the Social Democrat Hunchakian Party.

Turkish political figure and historian Kadir Akin talked about the heroic deeds of Paramaz (Mateos Sarkisian) in his speech entitled “Paramaz: The Person Who Linked the Loops of the Broken Chain”.

Among other speakers were writer, publicist and translator Grigor Janikyan, as well as candidates of historical sciences Gegham Hovhannisyan and Manuk Stepanyan.

After the speeches, the speakers actively engaged in debates and answered questions concerning the gathered.

What’s symbolic is that June 15th also marks National Flag Day in Armenia. Perhaps it wasn’t by chance that the day coincided with the day of remembrance of the 20 martyred members of the Social Democrat Hunchakian Party as the guarantee for turning their dream into a reality.

Plácido Domingo and Haigazian University Hit a High Note!

Two Operas, One Extraordinary Evening

GLENDALE — Haigazian University is celebrating its 60th Anniversary on October 3rd with a black-tie Gala fundraiser and a performance by Grammy award-winning tenor and conductor Plácido Domingo in the title role of Woody Allen’s production of Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi.” The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles will play host to the evening’s celebration which will be co-chaired by Harry Nadjarian and Tina Segel.

Speaking of the upcoming celebration, Mr. Domingo expressed words of welcome and nostalgia. “My mother, who was a wonderful singer, studied with an Armenian vocal teacher, so I have had a lifelong admiration for the Armenian Community’s rich tradition of music and performing arts. I am proud to welcome you to [the] LA Opera and I look forward to a wonderful celebration with you in our home.”

The evening will begin with a champagne and Lebanese mezze pre-reception for Haigazian guests, followed by two stunning performances by the incomparable Domingo—first, on stage, to sing the title role in Woody Allen’s production of the near-century old opera, “Gianni Schicchi” after which he will take to the podium and conduct Franco Zeffirelli’s production of Leoncavallo’s “Pagliacci.”

Following the performances, the evening will continue in the prestigious Grand Hall where guests of the Anniversary Celebration will dine and mingle during the Gala Supper.

Honorary Committee members include Governor George Deukmejian, Baroness Caroline Cox, Vartan Grigorian, and Joyce Philibosian Stein. More special guests to be announced.

Haigazian University may be half a world away in Beirut, Lebanon, but its influence and purpose is felt globally. With many of its founding roots planted in the United States, the University has been preserving Armenian culture and preparing future educators in the Diaspora for nearly 60 years. This upcoming Anniversary is a celebration of both the School and all for which it stands.

Kirk Kerkorian Dies in Los Angeles at Age 98

LOS ANGELES — Kirk Kerkorian, the son of poor Armenian immigrants who used his gambler’s instincts to became a multibillionaire Las Vegas casino tycoon, Hollywood mogul, airline owner and auto industry investor, died at age 98, according to media reports on Tuesday.

Kerkorian, who was the largest shareholder in MGM Resorts International, died on Monday night in Los Angeles following a brief illness, the Las Vegas Review-Journal said.

Kerkorian had little formal education and dropped out of school at age 16.

In his youth he was known as “Rifle Right Kerkorian” for his punching power as a small-time boxer and he would become an enduring American business heavyweight with a knack for placing winning bets in the corporate world.

In May, Forbes magazine estimated Kerkorian’s wealth at $4.2 billion after taking a hit on his investments in 2008, when the magazine said he was worth $16 billion.

Three different times – in 1969, 1973 and 1993 – Kerkorian built the world’s biggest hotel in Las Vegas, the desert gambling capital where he first made his fortune in the 1950s and 1960s. On his way to becoming a casino magnate, he befriended Rat Pack stars Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and other Las Vegas headliners.

He owned some of the biggest and best-known hotels and casinos in Las Vegas – at one time possessing more than half the hotel rooms on the famous Las Vegas strip. He also was instrumental in turning Las Vegas into a family destination rather than merely a naughty pleasure spot for adults.

Kerkorian bought and sold the venerable MGM film studio three times, acquired the United Artists studio and tried to buy Columbia Pictures. Even as a studio chief, he would stand in line to buy movie tickets at a theater with everyone else rather than attend private screenings.

He began buying property in Las Vegas in 1962 after selling his charter airline, which he later repurchased, and was on his way to becoming a Las Vegas power player.

“When you’re a self-made man you start very early in life,” Kerkorian once told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “… You get a drive that’s a little different, maybe a little stronger, than somebody who inherited.”

Kerkorian was born in Fresno, Calif., in 1917 to Armenian-born parents. The family moved to Los Angeles in 1922 and at age 9, Kerkorian sold newspapers on street corners. He dropped out of school in the eighth grade and became an amateur boxer.

From his humble beginnings, Kerkorian became one of the world’s richest men. Tracinda Corp., Kerkorian’s privately held investment company named for his daughters, Tracy and Linda, is MGM’s largest shareholder with an 18.6 percent stake.

Russian Soldier In Gyumri Held Over Killing Of Comrade

GYUMRI — The dead body of Ivan Novikov, a 19-year-old Russian army conscript, was found with several stab wounds in the northwestern Armenian city of Gyumri, which hosts the bulk of about 5,000 troops stationed at the 102nd Russian military base.

Colonel Aleksei Polyukhovich, a deputy commander of the Russian base, told reporters at the scene that another Russian soldier has been detained in connection with the killing. “He is now giving testimony,” Polyukhovich said, refusing to reveal his identity. Later in the day, Russian media identified the suspect as Ivan Boskhomdzhiev. The Interfax news agency quoted a Russian military spokesman as saying that he has already confessed to the murder.

102nd Russian military base in Gyumri, Armenia

According to initial information, an argument broke among three servicemen of the military base, in which one of them was killed and another one was hospitalized. The third serviceman was handed over to law-enforcement bodies.

Investigation has been launched by Armenian law-enforcement bodies. A criminal case has been filed under Article 104 of the Criminal Code of Armenia.

The incident has taken place less than half a year ago after a seven-member family of the Avetissyans was brutally murdered in Gyumri. The Russian soldier of the Gyumri military, 19-year-old private Valeri Permyakov was charged with the murders.

In January several protests were held in Gyumri, with Armenian citizens demanding that the Russia authorities transfer Permyakov to the Armenian side. However, so far Russia has refused to do that, insisting that Permyakov be prosecuted and tried under Russian laws.

4 Armenians Among Georgia Flood Victims

TBILISI — Four members of an Armenian family in Tbilisi are among at least 12 people killed in flooding that wreaked havoc on Georgia’s capital at the weekend, Armenia’s government said on Monday.

A senior official at the Armenian Ministry of Local Government and Emergency Situations, Hovannes Khangeldian, said the bodies of the four women, all of them Georgian nationals, were discovered on Monday morning. “The precise circumstances of their death are not yet clear,” he told RFE/RL’s Armenian service (Azatutyun.am).

Three of the victims victims were identified as Zhanna Yeghiazarova, Svetlana Yeghiazarova and Liana Yeghiazarova.

About a dozen Georgians remained missing one day after deadly floods swept away dozens of buildings and cars and devastated Tbilisi’s zoo. Georgia observed a day of mourning for the 12 people already confirmed dead as search and rescue operations continued.

Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamian expressed Armenia’s readiness to help Georgia deal with the consequences of the calamity when he phoned his Georgian counterpart Irakli Gharibashvili on Sunday. Armenian Minister of Emergency Situations Armen Yeritsian reaffirmed this offer in a phone call with his Georgian opposite number.

Khangeldian, who runs the National Center for Crisis Management at Yeritsian’s ministry, said the Armenian side specifically offered to send rescue teams to Tbilisi. “[The Georgian authorities] have replied that there is no need for any assistance yet,” the official said.

The floods also allowed tigers, lions, wolves, and other animals to escape from Tbilisi’s zoo. Some of the animals were killed by the floodwaters, some were shot by police, and others were captured and returned to their cages. Authorities asked city residents to stay indoors until all the animals are rounded up.

According to a spokesman for Yerevan’s Mayor Taron Markarian, four employees of the Armenian capital’s zoo were dispatched to Tbilisi to help their Georgian colleagues track down and save the missing animals. He said they will also communicate to relevant Georgian authorities Markarian’s proposal to temporarily shelter surviving animals at Yerevan’s recently renovated zoo.

Portugal Beat Armenia 3-2 in EURO Cup Qualifyer

YEREVAN (UEFA.com) — A Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick ensured Portugal recovered from conceding an early Armenia goal to register a win which keeps them clear at the UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying Group I summit.

In the 14th minute the hosts were ahead, Marcos Pizzelli’s superb free-kick from around 25 metres getting Sargis Hovsepyan’s first game as coach off to a deceptively fine start.

However, Ilídio Vale’s visitors were level 15 minutes later. Henrikh Mkhitaryan brought down João Moutinho in the box and Cristiano Ronaldo converted the penalty.

Just before half-time Armenia goalkeeper Roman Berezovski pulled off a good stop from Fábio Coentrão. Even so, Armenia were holding their own and in the 54th minute Pizzelli shot just over.

There was a sting in the tail, though, as Ronaldo ran onto a Ricardo Carvalho clearance and snuck in ahead of Robert Arzumanyan to chip the ball in over Berezovski and increase his record number of UEFA European Championship goals to 25.

It did not take him long to make it 26, the Portugal captain superbly controlling Rui Patrício’s clearance, turning and beating Berezovski from distance. Soon after Portugal were down to ten men, Tiago receiving a second booking for a foul on Artur Sarkisov.

With 18 minutes left Armenia had a lifeline, Hrayr Mkoyan pouncing after Patrício could only parry an effort from substitute Aras Özbiliz. Portugal held out with comfort though.

US House Appropriations Committee Maintains Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act in Foreign Countries Assistance Funding Bill

WASHINGTON, DC – The US House Appropriations Committee has approved the State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs (SFOPS) funding bill for Fiscal Year (FY) 2016, which covers US assistance to Armenia and the region. The bill maintains Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act, which was enacted in 1992 to address Azerbaijan’s hostile actions against Armenia. While funding for the countries of the South Caucasus was not specifically delineated, the SFOPS Report did highlight the need for additional assistance to Syrian refugees, Christians and other minorities afflicted by the Syrian civil war and the Islamic State (ISIS or ISIL).

“The Assembly has consistently advocated for robust funding to assist minority communities at risk in the Middle East, and strongly supports the provisions within the House Bill and report that help in this regard, including resettlement assistance,” stated Armenian Assembly of America (Assembly) Board Co-Chairmen Anthony Barsamian and Van Krikorian. “We urge Congress and the Administration to ensure that appropriate funding is also provided for those seeking refuge in Armenia,” they said.

The bill’s Report includes language calling attention to and funding for minority communities in the Middle East “including Christians.” The measure also expresses the Committee’s concern about “the plight of refugees from Syria and the burden they face as well as the strain on host communities,” and calls on the Secretary of State to take steps to assist US allies in the region and to deliver critical aid to refugees effectively. Finally, the Report, cognizant of Turkey’s growing authoritarianism, calls on the “Secretary of State to further dialogue with Turkey to incorporate the importance of media freedom, separation of powers, human rights, and the rule of law into ongoing discussions.”

Azerbaijan Banns Amnesty International and Gardian Newspaper from Baku European Games.

BAKU — The government of Azerbaijan has banned Amnesty International and the Guardian newspaper from entering the country to cover the inaugural European Games which begin on Friday.

Amnesty International said it was forced to cancel its plans after the government said its delegates would not be welcome until after the games, which run from June 12-28.

The group intended to hold a briefing called Azerbaijan: The Repression Games to highlight Azerbaijan’s crackdown on journalists, opposition members, and activists.

The Guardian originally applied for accreditation for its chief sports correspondent, Owen Gibson, in January, when the process opened. Flights were booked and accommodation in the media village confirmed by the organizers.

Following repeated inquiries as to the status of the accreditation, which also acts as a visa for entry to Azerbaijan, it was confirmed on 5 June by the head of press operations that approval for Gibson was still pending subject to government background checks.

Confirmation that the application had been turned down and the Guardian would not be able to enter the country to cover the event and associated issues was not received until Thursday morning – the day before the opening ceremony and three hours before the flight that had been booked.

The decision appears to be linked to the Guardian’s trip to Azerbaijan in December to report on preparations for the European Games and the country’s ambitious attempts to expand its portfolio of international sporting events, against a backdrop of rising concern about the government’s clampdown on freedom of speech and any political opposition. Gibson met government critics including the investigative journalist Khadija Ismayilova, who investigates corruption in Azerbaijan’s first family. Ismayilova was jailed shortly after and remains behind bars.

These moves came as British political activist Emma Hughes was detained on arrival in Azerbaijan and told she was on a “red list” of people who cannot enter the country.

Turkey Armenians Stage Major Protest March

Camp Armen Land Owner to Donate Orphanage to Armenian Foundation

ISTANBUL — Nor Zartonk movement of Istanbul Armenians organized a major protest demonstration and a march demanding the return of the city’s Camp Armen Armenian orphanage to the Armenian people.

Numerous Istanbul Armenians, as well as activists of Turkish and other nationalities supporting them, assembled on May 22, carrying banners with the inscription “Return Camp Armen to the Armenians” CNN Turk reports .

Protesters marched to Galatasaray High School, where Nor Zartonk member Sayat Tekir issued a statement. He reminded that Camp Armen was established in 1962 and accepted Armenian orphans, including the late Hrant Dink—the founder and chief editor of Agos Armenian bilingual weekly of Istanbul, who was shot dead on January 19, 2007 outside the editorial office— and his wife Rakel.

Tekir said they will be standing guard at Camp Armen until a decision is made to return it to its real owners, the Armenian people.

After the announcement of the activist, the protest action ended peacefully.

Camp Armen Armenian orphanage was seized by the Turkish authorities back in 1987. Subsequently, it was sold to a Turkish businessman who, in turn, decided to demolish the orphanage and build luxury homes in the premises.

Land Owner to Donate Camp Armen to Armenian Protestant Church Foundation

The owner of the land of the Armenian Children’s Camp, which has been at the center of ongoing controversy with activists attempting to prevent a planned demolition of the former orphanage, has announced that he will be donating it to the Gedikpasa Armenian Protestant Church Foundation, Turkish Evrensel newspaper reports.

“I respectfully announce to the public that I will be donating the land to the Gedikpasa Armenian Protestant Church Foundation… with the hopes of contributing to social harmony and unity of our country in line with our Armenian citizens thoughts and wishes,” announced Fatih Ulusoy, who owns the land where the former orphanage is located, in a written statement published Saturday.

Ulusoy noted that Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu’s request that the issue be resolved had been relayed to him through the efforts of Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbas, ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Istanbul Chair Selim Temurci and Tuzla District Mayor Sadi Yazici. He added that when he purchased the deed to the land back in 2006 there had been no mention or information regarding there being an orphanage on the land, and also that he was personally upset by some of the speculations that had arisen around the issue.
