More Than 1400 Armenians Attended
GLENDALE — An overflow crowd of more than 1400 attended the 100 anniversary commemoration of the Armenian Nation’s 20 Hunchakian Martyrs, which was held on Sunday, June 14, 2015, at historic Alex Theatre in Glendale.
The evening Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Mrs. Zovig Koroghlian. Mr. Vahan Khodanian delivered the Armenian Council of Americaâs message for the commemoration. ACA Chairman Mr. Sevak Khatchadourian introduced, the descendants of the 20 Martyrs along with the elected officials who were present for the commemorations. Afterward, he presented âStephan Sapah-Gulian Integrity Awardâ to Rep. Adam Schiff for his continued leadership towards championing causes important to the Armenian American Community.
After receiving a standing ovation, Rep. Shiff delivered a short speech expressing his gratitude for the award. The Congressman stated “The twenty Hunchakian Martyrs who died a century ago, understood the importance of what they were fighting for, had the courage to take on a corrupt and murderous dictatorship, and that their ideals will go on and help birth a great nation.” He also stated that he is proud to represent his Armenian-American constituents in Congress, and promised to double his efforts for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
Eventâs other speakers were Social Democrat Hunchakian Party Central Committee Chairman Mr. Hagop Dikranian, political activist from Armenia Mr. Sarkis Hatspanian, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian primate of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church and Chairman of the Social Democrat Hunchakian Party Executive Committee Western USA Region Gabriel Moloyan.
An artistic program of Armenian national and patriotic songs and poems was presented with the participation of âSipanâ Choir, conducted by Henrik Annasian, Nor Serount Cultural Associationâs dance troupe, well known poetry reciter Noune Avedissian and talented singers Salpi Mayilian, Arno Arno Mkrtchyan and Harut Hagopian.
